The Guinness Connection
The Guinness brewing dynasty had an enormous impact on Iveagh House. Firstly, Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness saved the house from near dereliction in the mid-1800s. His son, Edward Cecil, undertook considerable work in the 1880s, adding a ballroom between 1896 and 1898. Edward’s brother, Arthur, later Lord Ardilaun, paid for the refurbishment of St Stephen’s Green. In 1939, Rupert Guinness kindly donated Iveagh House to the Irish State in perpetuity, and it became the headquarters of the Department of External Affairs, as it was known at the time.
An ceangal le muintir Guinness
Bhí tionchar ollmhór ag an teaghlach grúdaireachta Guinness ar Theach Uíbh Eachach. Ar an gcéad dul síos, bheadh an teach tréigthe murach Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness i lár na 1800idí. Rinne a mhac, Edward Cecil, obair mhór sna 1880idí, nuair a chuir sé bálseomra leis an teach idir 1896 agus 1898. Ba é deartháir Edward, Arthur, an Tiarna Ardilaun ina dhiaidh sin, a d’íoc as athchóiriú Fhaiche Stiabhna. Sa bhliain 1939, bhronn Rupert Guinness Teach Uíbh Eachach ar Stát na hÉireann.

Beginnings
