The Zwaanendeal Merman

Created by craftsman in 19th century Japan, this figure represents a Ningyo.
Ningyos are a half man, half fish character that appears in Japanese folklore, and are said to bring good or bad luck to the person who catches one.

The Zwaanendael Merman is made of wire, clay, fish skin wood, animal claws, papier-mâché and natural fibers.

NOTES ABOUT THE 3D Model
The model has white areas which are the result of the Merman's "hairs" photographed as the camera moves around the model.
The fringe "hairs" change position due to gravity, motion and air currents as the Merman is photographed in altered positions.
When combining the images to yield the 3Dmodel the altered hair positions in many images result in the white fringe.
