Welcome to the Region of Waterloo’s only operating landfill.

There are lots of things to see by clicking left and right.

Go left to see construction of a new cell.
Go right to see where your garbage goes.

HDPE #2, or High-density polyethylene, is strong, lightweight, does not break or puncture easily and is very versatile. It is seen as food and beverage containers, cleaning supplies, and can be recycled into plastic lumber, patio furniture, automotive parts and even recycling bins.

There are five storm managements ponds around the site. These are designed to control the rain run-off and snow melt and are tested regularly. We find many turtles, ducks and herons in our ponds.

Ground water is especially important to the Region of Waterloo, we should all do our part to protect it.

Every truck is weighted in and weighted out so we know how much garbage, recycling, green bin and other collected material we receive. Only waste from Waterloo Region is allowed here.

In the sorting room, technology and people work together to ensure that the sorting is free from contamination. Rinsing your containers and separating containers from paper and plastic bags certainly helps!

Wind can change garbage day into litter day. Here at the tipping face there can be a lot of litter. The fence acts like a net catching the litter.

The first step to building a cell is excavation. The size of a cell is typically about three football fields in length and about 12 metres in depth. The soil excavated is saved and reused on site as cover over the garbage and for road building.
htmlText_20BC4CBC_2B20_1A03_41B4_1689AD299E5A.html =
Bales of material need to be perfectly sorted (no contamination in them) to be sent to the recycling processors.

These pop cans will be melted down, reformed, refilled and back into the store in about 60 days.
htmlText_20BC5CBD_2B20_1A7D_41B7_4094DFEB0F36.html =
Once sorted, all this material will be sold and recycled into new products. By doing our part at home to reduce, reuse and recycle, we lessen our impacts on the environment, and the demand for natural resources.
htmlText_20BC6CB9_2B20_1A05_41C1_B5B513FF754C.html =
PET #1, or Polyethylene terephthalate, is the most common type of plastic packaging and is seen in water bottles and food packaging. This can be recycled into a variety of things, such as sleeping bags, polar fleece, carpeting and even more plastic bottles.
htmlText_20BCDCB7_2B20_1A0D_41B7_C962B16B4FA3.html =
This side of the NLMRC is for paper, cardboard and even plastic bags. By the time it reaches here, the material has been sorted at home and again by our drivers. From here the material is sent for further processing and recycled into new paper and paper products.
htmlText_20BCFCB7_2B20_1A0D_4167_86BB6EA9B782.html =
Using a magnet we separate the aluminum from everything else. Watch the pop cans jump into their own bin.

In the pre-sort room, items that are not recyclable are removed. Do not bag containers. Plastic bags on the container line conveyor get caught in the conveyor rollers and damage the sorting equipment.
htmlText_20BD3CBF_2B20_1A7D_41A7_01620A537992.html =
After materials are sorted, they travel by conveyor into the baler to be compressed and tied into bales. Bales make stacking, storing and transporting the material easier. One bale of pop cans can hold approximately 40,000 pop cans.
htmlText_20BD5CC0_2B20_1A03_41A3_8D7F5B7D352E.html =
These mixed containers are first sorted at home, and then by our collectors at the curb. Further sorting gets materials ready to be baled and shipped to processors where they get made into other things.

Continue the tour to discover more about what happens to your containers.

The optical sorter uses ultraviolet light to scan the density of the items on the conveyor belt. Based on the density, small bursts of air shoot out and push the items into one of three sorting lines that are heading toward the sorting room.
htmlText_20BD9CBD_2B20_1A7D_419E_0AA2F02750FA.html =
This side of the sorting room sorts the rest of our containers. Here the focus is on milk and juice cartons and aluminum cans. Milk and juice cartons can be recycled into useful items such as toilet paper, and even a substitute for drywall.

In the landfill, two pieces of equipment are responsible for placing the garbage. The bulldozer spreads the garbage and the compactor packs it. To maximize the area taken up by the each day’s garbage, GPS tracks how much space the garbage is using in the landfill.

Once the cell is full, a clay cap (three meters deep) will be placed across the entire cell and joined to the clay liner sides. The cell, and all the garbage inside, will be completely sealed.

To support the first ever blue box curbside collection program, the first community sized municipal recycling sorting centre opened in 1991 at this Waterloo site. All blue box material from the region comes here for sorting.
htmlText_20BECCC0_2B20_1A03_41C3_853969FFD37A.html =
The blue box was invented in 1983 in Kitchener. It changed the way Waterloo Region residents recycle and has inspired other municipalities across the country to change their practices. Nyle is proof that one person can make a difference in the world.

Welcome to the inside of a new landfill cell. A landfill cell is designed to safely hold garbage. Once excavated, the bottom and sides are lined with three meters of compacted clay and covered with a protective liner. Pipes are laid along the bottom to collect liquids (leachate). The cell will be filled with layers of garbage.
htmlText_20BEECC1_2B20_1A05_41BB_527879ADAAF7.html =
As materials come into the NLMRC, they are clumped together. The shaker table separates the materials before entering the optical sorter so that each item can be better scanned and sorted.
htmlText_20BF1CC4_2B20_1A03_41B9_83DA4E5EACAE.html =
Part of the engineered design is a clay liner. The liner is three metres of compacted clay on the bottom and sides of the hole (cell). This clay liner is a very important piece of the construction as it protects the environment (groundwater, air and soil).

A network of pipes collects and transports leachate to the waste water plant for treatment.

Gravel is placed along the bottom of the cell to act as a drainage layer and to protect the drainage pipes. Rain, melted snow and liquids from your garbage drain through the garbage and into these pipes. The liquid is called leachate and is removed through this piping system.

Plastic bags like grocery bags, bread, milk, salt, zippered bags and plastic outer wrap from pop cases and toilet paper can be recycled.

Put all bags into one bag, tie shut and put in the Paper and Plastic Bag blue box.

If in doubt, check it out! Ask the Waste Whiz or call 519-575-4400.

Everything you see here is garbage. Here at the landfill’s tip face, garbage is first leveled and then compacted. The goal is to fill in all the air space in the cell.

At the end of each day the compacted garbage must be covered to control odours, litter, and keep pests away. Several daily covers may be used. This picture shows a retractable tarp used to cover the garbage. Other daily covers include soil or a spray-on biodegradable mulch.
