Sharing peatland visions with the world
In 2020, the IUCN UK Peatland Programme established a Flickr image collection with the vision of sharing images of peatlands with the wider peatland community - and further afield - as a means of opening up the world of peatlands to the global community.

Music consists of patterns made by a fairly limited number of notes. Peatlands are the same, in that a small number of structural elements - high hummocks, high ridges, low ridges, hollows, pools - creates huge variety through the arrangement of therse features.
The arrangement of pattern is generally a far more important determiner of ecosystem function and ecosystem services than the vegetation composition found within the pattern - much as the arrangement of notes means something, giving us Bach's Toccata, or Beethoven's Pastorale, or Grieg's Holberg Suite.
Yet we currently don't use this most characteristic aspect and source of variation when assessing the nature of condition of our peat bog ecosystems. It is rather like describing Grieg's Holberg Suite as 'lots of quavers and crotchets'. It's how they are put together that is the crucial thing. Click on the musical note and think on this...
A farmed Sphagnum carpet generated after some 3 years of cultivation on a milled peat field. In places the carpet is now as much as 30 cm deep.
