Welcome to The College Nursery


The College Nursery is part of The Activate Learning Group and is situated within a 10-minute walk to Bracknell and Wokingham College. The nursery is registered with OFSTED to take up to 57 children daily.


The nursery currently operates on a term time basis, with a holiday club in each of the 3 half terms, from Tuesday to Friday.


The nursery offers a friendly and caring atmosphere for children, from 3 months old until they enter full time education. The garden is grassed and fenced off with access via a secure gate. The nursery employs a Manager who is responsible for the day to day running and organisation, along with a Deputy Manager, Room Leaders, Nursery Assistants, and an Administration Assistant.


The Nursery Manager is a Graduate and most other staff hold a relevant Level 3 Qualification and regularly attend training tailored to the needs of the children in our care.


All members of staff are subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check, and everyone is trained in Paediatric First Aid, which is updated every three years.


The College Nursery aims to provide an environment where children flourish and reach their full potential. We acknowledge that each child is a unique individual and therefore has individual needs. We place great importance on knowing them well, that includes their learning styles, preferences, and interests. We then support each child in developing at their own pace.

The Daisy Room is the room where our 2 – 3-year-old children are based. In this room there is a 1 adult to 4 children ratio.

Again, we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. Each child has their own Learning Journal. When your child starts at the nursery, we will complete an initial assessment with you, and then build on this information to use as a basis to plan their next steps.

Your child is allocated a key person who will take special responsibility in helping them to settle in, giving you the reassurance to leave the nursery, confident that someone is fully supporting them. It is important that you and your child get to know the key person and that information is shared daily. We aim to provide an environment where your child is excited and motivated to learn.

The key person will add to your child’s Learning Journey throughout their time with us, and you will be provided with termly reports on the progress your child is making and what together, the nursery and you at home can do to support their learning.

Buttercup room is our baby and toddler room. We take babies from 3 months and they stay in this room until their second birthday. There is a 1 adult to 3 children ratio here.

The room consists of a play area, sleep area and separate nappy changing area.

Each baby is allocated a key person when they begin nursery, who will take special responsibility in helping them to settle and carry out their daily personal care routines.

We work towards the Early years Foundation Stage Curriculum, concentrating on the 3 Prime Areas, which are Personal, Social, and Emotional Development, Communication and Language and Physical Development. The babies are encouraged to explore their environment and there is an emphasis at this age on sensory play activities.

Each child has an individual Learning Journey which the key person will regularly update. Parents are also encouraged to contribute to this too. Each half term we will send home an ‘I’ve done something special’ form, for parents to record special milestones, days, or achievements.

We work with parents and try to keep to the child’s individual home routine as much as possible.

Children have access to the outside garden area daily.

The children have free access to move from inside to outside to this area from the Bluebell Room during the day. Staff move around with the children.

The Bluebell Room is our older children’s room. Generally, children move up into this room as they are approaching their 3rd birthday and stay until it is time to go to school. The staffing ratio is 1 adult to 8 children, once all the children have turned 3 years old.

The nursery helps children learn by providing interesting activities that are appropriate to their age and stage of development. We assess how children are learning by observing them frequently. We use information that we gain from observations, as well as photographs, to document the children’s progress which we compile into a Learning Journey. We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum.

We believe that children learn best through play. The children are encouraged to work together, choosing from a wide range of resources which are on offer to them throughout the day.

There is a mix of both, child-initiated and adult led experiences which focus on gaining independence skills, resilience, self-belief and confidence. The daily routine in this room is structured to prepare the children for getting ready to go to school.

This room is used for specific small group planned activities. It is a calm environment where the children can focus in the quiet atmosphere.

This room is also used by visiting professionals when carrying out a 1 to 1 session with individual children, for example speech and language.
