Opera tells stories through music that convey deep heartfelt emotions. Poe’s story centers siblings, isolated at home with fear of sickness and death. Glass infuses the emotions at the core of Poe’s literary masterpiece through his careful layering and repetition to bring the characters further depth. At this moment in history, when the world is confined largely to home, keeping our own anxieties of illness at bay, singers are particularly challenged in their ability to interpret and perform the art in which they have trained. BLO’s creative team brings all of these raw elements together, weaving history with present day, to retell Poe’s story, Glass’ opera through an animated film—a timeless dream space that connects to the very tender, heartsick moment in our human history, told from a distinctly American perspective.

Edgar Allan Poe wrote his short story, The Fall of the House of Usher, that was first published in a magazine in 1839, where he served ad assistant editor. Born in Boston, his parents died when he was only two and Poe was raised by friends of the family in Virginia. He began writing at a very early age, publishing his first collection of poetry at age 18, while he was stationed in the U.S. Army at Fort Independence on Boston’s Harbor (known today as Castle Island). Over the four decades that made up his relatively short life, he was a prolific published poet, Gothic fiction writer, and literary critic with a strong point of view. His work has had substantial influence on many other writers and artists particularly in the genres of science fiction, mystery, and horror. He is often referenced or depicted in popular culture in association to his poem, The Raven.

Arthur Yorinks adapted Poe’s short story into a libretto for the opera. Yorinks is an author, playwright, and director. He collaborated with Philip Glass on two operas, The Fall of the House of Usher (1988) and The Juniper Tree (1985). Yorinks is also known for his children’s books, and won the Caldecott Medal in 1987 for his book, Hey Al. He has collaborated extensively with Maurice Sendak in both written and theatrical work for children and adults. Yorinks has had a particular interest in audio and storytelling, and has written and directed many projects for radio. In 2018, Yorinks was in residence at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art working on a new adaptation of The Fall of the House of Usher opera using Glass’ music, but re-envisioning the work and the story completely and incorporating in film, audio, and other media.

Philip Glass was commissioned by the American Repertory Theatre and Kentucky Opera to conceive and compose The Fall of the House of Usher opera in 1987. He’d already written eight operas and chamber operas, and has since written many more. Glass is often described as one of the most influential composers of the late 20th and early 21st century. His work is influenced by Minimalism, a form of musical composition that is layered with repetition. In addition to opera, Glass has written many symphonies, concertos, quartets, and countless film and television scores—three of which have been nominated for Academy Awards. Glass founded his own ensemble in 1968 as an incubator to explore, perform, and record his compositions. The Philip Glass Ensemble is still active in this manner although Glass only performs with them on occasion.

BLO Creatives are a collaborative team of talented artists that bring their own contemporary perspective to this iconic work. Inspired by screenwriter, Raúl Santos’ creative vision, director James Darrah guided teams to weave together three different film styles, including hand-drawn and stop-motion animation along with archival pop-culture video storytelling. Together, the combined expertise of production designer Yuki Izumihara, director of photography Pablo Santiago, costume and doll designer Camille Assaf, lead animator Will Kim, and lead illustrator Rodrigo Muñoz, and their teams bring a richness, depth, and immediacy to BLO’s opera film.

The Opera

Edgar Allan Poe’s inspiration for his short story, is unknown, but he likely drew influence from a few different places. There was an Usher estate just off the Boston Common, owned by a British merchant family in the late 1600s. The house was torn down in 1830, and it was said that two bodies were found in the cellar. He was also probably influenced from a few stories in popular contemporary literature that would have been well-known to him, and thus adopted similar themes and elements. The Fall of the House of Usher endures as one of Edgar Allan Poe’s most well-known short stories. It has been adapted many times since into film, opera, music, theater, animation, even puppetry.

Phillip Glass and Arthur Yorinks collaborated to adapt Usher into a chamber opera commissioned by the American Repertory Theatre and Kentucky Opera in 1987. It premiered May 13, 1988, at A.R.T. in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The opera was subsequently performed in New York City, and has since been performed several times internationally. Glass had the idea to turn the opera into a film shortly after it premiered—not a filmed version of the opera, but rather a story in film that incorporated the operatic score and was inspired by Poe’s narrative. Plans were soon underway to realize this with support from the Sundance Film Festival with Michael Powell directing, yet the project ended up being pushed to the side and then never revisited after Powell’s death. Yorinks recently revisited this idea, taking it in a new and different direction, but building off of what was started in the late 1980s. He recently workshopped this at a residency hosted by the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art.

At this moment in history, when the world is confined to our homes while keeping anxieties of illness at bay, singers too are challenged by evaporated opportunities to perform—to share the beauty of the human voice at a time when it is needed most. BLO’s creative team brings all of these raw elements together, weaving history with present day, to retell Poe’s story, Glass’ opera through an animated film. The film includes two kinds of animation as well as iconic American imagery, adding layers to the opera score performed by BLO artists. The result is a story within a story—a timeless dream space that connects to the very tender, heartsick moment in our human history.

The Story

William arrives at the House of Usher, having received a letter from his boyhood friend, Roderick Usher, begging him to visit. Roderick and his sister, Madeline, are the last left of the Usher family, and Madeline is mysteriously ill. So William has rushed to be at Roderick’s side. As a servant leads him through the gloomy home, William meets a departing physician, who curtly warns him not to upset the household.

Roderick, pale and drawn, greets William, but when William gives him a music box as a gift, Roderick recoils from its sound. His nerves are overwrought from caring for his ill sister, and he says that he cannot leave the house. William promises to do whatever he can to help.

That night, as a storm rages, William observes Roderick brushing Madeline’s hair and is unnerved at the sight. He hurries to his room and goes to bed, but is awakened several times by troubling dreams of Roderick and Madeline.

A few days later, in Roderick’s painting studio, William has grown increasingly anxious, even as Roderick’s mood has improved. Part of William longs to leave, yet he cannot bear to, imprisoned in the House of Usher by his own fear and unnamed desire. They see the physician on his way out. Roderick finishes his painting, which William sees is of a tomb. Roderick reflects on his family home. When William inquires about Madeline, Roderick tells him that she has died.

William helps Roderick carry Madeline’s coffin down to the tombs under the House of Usher. Roderick gazes at his sister, but when William looks inside the coffin, he quickly closes the lid. Roderick reveals that he and Madeline were twins. That evening, he becomes agitated, accusing the physician of murdering Madeline, and William tries to soothe him.

A few nights later, Roderick comes to William’s room. There is an eerie light outside, unnerving them both. William declares that tomorrow, they will leave the House of Usher together. They decide to spend the night together and return to Roderick’s studio to wait until morning. As William recalls memories of their boyhood play, they begin to hear frightening noises coming closer. Roderick exclaims that they have entombed Madeline alive. She suddenly bursts through the door, bloody and disheveled, and falls on Roderick. William flees, turning back briefly to witness the house crumble to the ground.

The Philip Glass Ensemble is still active in this manner although Glass only performs with them on occasion.

His work is influenced by Minimalism, a form of musical composition that is layered with repetition. In addition to opera, Glass has written many symphonies, concertos, quartets, and countless film and television scores—three of which have been nominated for Academy Awards. Edgar Allan Poe

A Dream Within a Dream
by Edgar Allen Poe

Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow —
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.

I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand —
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep — while I weep!
O God! Can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?
