The summer population of Grytviken was about 400 men, mostly living in barracks.
The large white building is the New Barracks (Ny-brakka). Built in 1950 and centrally-heated, it housed a maximum of 100 workmen in rooms mainly with four bunks. There were four other barracks in this area of which foundations can be seen.
The men ate in the Mess with its adjoining Kitchen. The Butcher's Shop was nearby. There was a separate bathhouse (demolished) and the Russian Barracks - Russebrakka (demolished) contained the Laundry (some of its equipment is still standing).
Most whalers came from Vestfold county in south-east Norway, but others came from several other nations, especially Britain, Argentina and the Falkland Islands. The men worked 12-hour shifts, seven days a week during a season that lasted from October to March. Although Grytviken was a place for hard work and earning money, there were some facilities for recreation. The football pitch at the back was also the site for inter-station sports competitions. Skiing was popular among the Norwegians and there are the remains of a wooden Ski-Jump on the hillside behind the church.
The foundations of the Kino, the whalers' Cinema, are in front of the Church. The cinema provided one of the few forms of organised entertainment.

The whale-catcher Petrel (245 tons, 115 feet) was built in Oslo (Nyland), Norway in 1928. Petrel was one of the first catchers to have a catwalk which enabled the gunner to run from the bridge to the gun. She was converted for sealing in 1956 and the gun and catwalk were removed. (The harpoon gun on the bow is a recent addition.) Each summer Petrel visited the beaches around South Georgia where her crew collected an annual quota of bull elephant seals, whose blubber yielded a valuable oil.
Several stores served the fleet of whale catchers and sealers. Most important were the Main Store (Magasinet)and the Rope Store.

Whales were cut up on a large wooden platform – the plan – that covered this open space of about 3200m2 (0.8 acre)
This is the centre of the station. A 50-tonne electric winch (now removed) located at the top of the plan pulled the whales from the sea up the iron slipway behind you. The blubber was removed by flensers armed with long-handled knives. Cables were attached to strips of blubber which were ripped off the carcass, like the skin from a banana, by steam winches and passed to the blubber cookery on the right. Then the meat was cut off by the lemmers and sent to the meat cookery on the left. The bones were pulled to the bone factory at the top of the plan. On a good day about 30 fin whales, each 18m (60 ft) long, could be processed in 24 hours to yield 200 tonnes of oil.
The chains lying on the right of the plan were used to fasten dead whales to the whale-catchers, for towing back to the whaling station.
