From Stromness Whaling Station and it was salvaged when the museum was set up in 1992 by Nigel Bonner.
Ulefos jernværk is an iron works company that operates in Ulefoss, Norway. It is in the neighbouring county to Vestfold, which was the centre of the industrial whaling industry in Norway. Ulefos jernværk began in 1657! At this time, it was famous for castings but had to deal in bar iron to create more income. Skip forward to the end of the 19th century and they were importing pig iron for casting and created famous solid fuel burning stoves into the 1950s. In the early 20th century Norway was also interested in the arts and crafts movement, and this resulted in some beautifully decorative designs. Now the company creates much of the iron work used for manhole coverings.

This surviving fragment of wallpaper offers a rare glimpse into the domestic world of Stromness whaling station. Printed in a soft olive-green colour, the design features delicate floral motifs arranged in baskets, set against a fine dotted background. The pattern reflects popular early twentieth-century interior fashions, bringing a touch of comfort and refinement to a remote outpost at the edge of the Southern Ocean.
Layers of paint and decades of exposure have partially concealed the original design, yet enough remains to reveal the care once taken in furnishing the manager's residence. In a settlement dominated by heavy industry, noise and harsh weather, details such as this wallpaper helped transform a functional building into a home.
Today, the fragment stands as a reminder that Stromness was not only a place of work, but also a place where people lived, entertained guests and sought a sense of normality far from the rest of the world.
