The contrast between these two mediums has come to represent the foundation of my work and an exploration of the tension turned symbiosis between them. I was born in the Bronx but currently reside in Harlem. Living in New York City my entire life has heavily influenced my love for diversity, culture and spirituality which all take center stage in my portraits. Many of my subjects are of African American, Caribbean or Latinx descent because these were the cultures that were the closest to me growing up. In a way, they also serve as a journey into my own roots that I have sometimes felt fluctuating levels of connection to throughout my life. My art is also touched by the essence of street art with a penchant for vibrant colors, distinctive shapes and symbolism.
I currently work in Exhibition Design at a museum while making my art pieces. My academic background rests in Studio Art and Architecture with experience in drawing, painting, sculpture and computer-aided design. For me, drawing, building something from a blank piece of paper is a process that often involves vision, struggle, attachment, tension, meditation and satisfaction. It is extremely personal as I always instill a sliver of myself into each piece I create. However, my hope is that each work in my collection tells a story, some with deeper narratives than others, that may be read differently from person to person but ultimately draw forth a moment of connection.
