The University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law was established in 1816 and began regular instruction in 1824. It is the third-oldest law school in the nation, but its innovative programs make it one of the liveliest and most dynamic today. Maryland Carey Law stands among five other professional schools on the Founding Campus of the University of Maryland. It has taken advantage of this location to become an integral part of the Baltimore-Washington legal and business community.
The main law school building is connected to historic Westminster Hall. Formerly a Presbyterian Church, Westminster Hall’s gothic revival architecture and stunning stained glass windows make a spectacular backdrop for many law school events.

The law school is located across the street from one of the University of Maryland, Baltimore shuttle stops and a major transit stop. UMB has three shuttles, a northbound route that travels up through the Mt. Vernon neighborhood to Penn Station; an eastbound route that goes through downtown, Little Italy, Fells Point, Patterson Park, Canton, and Highlandtown; and a southbound route that goes through downtown to Federal Hill. The city also has an extensive bus system with several routes passing directly in front of the law school.
Our Office of Admissions is located on the main level, just off the atrium. If you have any questions about the admissions process, academic offerings, experiential learning opportunities, living in Baltimore, or anything else that would help you decide if Maryland Carey Law is the right fit for you, please reach out directly to the team.
Whether you are alone or in a group, the library offers many spaces for you to study and conduct research. Library staff are always on hand to help you find what you need and navigate the multitude of resources available.
When you enter the law school, you will step into our beautiful atrium. The space is bathed in natural light from a skylight five stories above and is the location of some of our favorite law school events.

In addition to the impressive materials on site, you will also have access to a wide variety of digital materials including databases, journals, and special collections. Among these resources, you’ll also find the five Maryland Carey Law journals. Participating in a student-run journal will deepen your understanding of the law and demonstrate your critical thinking and leadership capacity to future employers.

Any JD student who enrolls at Maryland Carey Law as a 1L in our full-time, day program will provide legal services to people who are poor or otherwise lack access to justice as a prerequisite to graduation. Participating in a clinic is how most students fulfill that requirement while getting critical, hands-on experience with real clients and real cases.
