This is your virtual tour to the Finland's largest depot area, VR FleetCare's Helsinki depot, which is located only five kilometers from the city center.


The area covers more than 60 hectares in total, of which seven hectares are modern production facilities. At Helsinki depot, FleetCare maintains 140 trains per day. In addition, the depot has rolling stock that is undergoing heavy maintenance and modernisation.

A peek at the roof that we don't see on usual visiting tours!


The solar power plant installed on the roof of the maintenance hall in 2020 is one of the largest in Finland with a nominal power of 928 kWp.


The power plant consists of 2,264 solar panels. The annual electricity production corresponds to the electricity consumption of 40 electrically heated detached houses. The energy obtained from the power plant is allocated to the maintenance of high-speed trains and it covers a quarter of the annual energy need in the hall.


The introduction of a large solar power plant at the Helsinki depot is part of FleetCare's wider energy efficiency project.

Commuter train maintenance services are responsible for the maintenance of more than 140 units of rolling stock. FleetCare’s professionals carry out maintenance, fault and damage repairs, alteration work and modernisations on rolling stock operating in commuter traffic.


With regard to standby maintenance, the commuter traffic hall carries out cleaning, waste removal, drainage and inspections, among other things.

Component production deals with safety-critical components of the rolling stock, which is why our employees have product-specific training in addition to basic training.


In this department, we handle more than 2,000 active titles: electronic components, precision mechanics and valves.

Lathe work halls offer lathe facilities for the wheelsets of any types of rolling stock. We use single and tandem lathes (Hegenscheidt).


A Zephir shunter is used to move the rolling stock to the lathe work hall. The rolling stock to be worked on can also be driven into the hall and cabled to the lathe.


Single lathe
• A mechanical under-floor wheel-lathe for working on one wheelset at a time
• Suitable for lathe work on wheelsets of any type of rolling stock


Tandem lathe
• Tandem lathes work on an entire bogie, in other words two wheelsets, at once
• Suitable for lathe work on wheelsets of any rolling stock, excluding diesel locomotives and yellow machines

Testing ensures quality.
The Helsinki depot has a high testing capacity for troubleshooting and testing of completed
work. In addition, the depot uses bogie turning machines, bridge cranes, spring
testing devices, hydraulic presses and special tools to ensure safe and efficient work.


Our bogie production has equipment for demanding bogie maintenance work: bogie turning equipment, overhead cranes, spring testing equipment and hydraulic presses. In addition to bogies pantographs, switches and compressors are serviced here.

The Pendolino hall of the Helsinki depot provides maintenance, standby maintenance and heavy maintenance for Pendolino and Allegro trains.


The Pendolino hall consists of four through tracks, each with:
• Service pits
• Overhead maintenance platforms for working on the roof
• 1,500 V substations
• Contact wires that can be switched off


The hall also has a wheelset replacement station for Pendolino trains and washing facilities for efficient cleaning of the rolling stock.

The component production unit of the Helsinki depot carries out component maintenance for the rolling stock operating in Finland. In addition, FleetCare’s professionals provide maintenance for equipment sent to them from nearby regions and Europe.


Brakes, air dryers and cylinders are serviced here. FleetCare's selection includes more than 14 different types of brakes.

The locomotive hall provides maintenance for more than 180 locomotives and yellow machines every year. The hall also provides maintenance for both electric and diesel locomotives, regardless of brand.

The passenger coach hall of the Helsinki depot has three through tracks and facilities for
the comprehensive service and maintenance of the rolling stock.


Two tracks have service pits, 1,500 V substations and contact wires that can be switched
off. Instead of a contact wire, the third track has overhead maintenance platforms for
working on the roof. This track is only used for heavy maintenance, wheelset replacements
and major daily repairs.

Helsinki depot in brief


Construction of the depot started in 1967 and it was opened in 1980. From 2006 to 2012 the Helsinki depot underwent major renovations, during which operations were modernised and new maintenance halls were built in the area.


Today the Helsinki depot serves as FleetCare's largest service point. Within the almost 7 hectares of hall space there is also a service workshop, which is responsible for overhauls and component services.
