Ruth Wright Hayre (1910-1998), born in Atlanta, GA, was an educator, administrator, and philanthropist. Hayre became vice principal of William Penn High School in 1953 and principal in 1955, both firsts for an African American in Philadelphia. She retired in 1978. She was the first African American and woman president of the Philadelphia Board of Education.

Hidden African American Philadelphia in the 20th Century

The Black Lives Always Mattered project is a seminal graphic novel funded by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage that presents the history and impact of fourteen Black Philadelphians. The graphic novel will be written by Eisner Award winning author, Dr. Sheena C. Howard, and features artwork from some of the comic book industry’s finest talents: Akinseye Brown, Dylan B. Caleho, Jamar Nicholas, Micheline Hess, Nile Livingston, Eric Battle, Mike Leeke, Christine Kerrick, Nancy Devard, Jamar Nicholas, Dwayne Turner, Will Rosado, and Damali Beatty. Originally on display in Charles Library, this exhibit is a preview of their striking illustrations. Also displayed are selected graphic novels, comic books, cartoons and graphic memoirs created by African Americans, from the Charles L. Blockson Afro-American Collection.

Du Bois (1868-1998), born in Great Barrington, MA, as an assistant instructor in sociology at the University of Pennsylvania, Du Bois published his pioneering sociological investigation The Philadelphia Negro. The book focuses on all aspects of Black life including, migration, church, family, health, education, crime, and race relations.

John W. Mosley (1907-1969), a self-taught photojournalist, moved to Philadelphia from North Carolina in 1934, taking a job at Barksdale Photography Studio at 8th and Market Street. From the 1930s through the late 1960s, he documented through his photos the leaders, entertainers, athletes, family gatherings, cultural and social events, and Atlantic City vacations of the area’s African American community. After, Mosley’s death, the Still family donated his archives of 300,000 negatives and prints to the Charles L. Blockson Afro-American Collection of Temple University.

Over the course of his career, Cecil B. Moore became the best-known and most effective civil rights leader in African American political life in Philadelphia. Passing the bar in 1954, he opened a firm in Philadelphia defending poor and working class blacks. In 1962, he became president of the Philadelphia Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and challenged major corporations like the Ford Motor Company, all-white building trade unions, Trail ways and Greyhound bus companies, and Girard College on their exclusionary practices and policies against black people.

Crystal Bird Fauset (1894-1965), was born in Princess Anne, Maryland. She studied at Teacher’s College, Columbia University, graduating in 1931. She was the first African American woman elected to the Pennsylvania State Legislature (1938). Through her friendship with Eleanor Roosevelt, Fauset became a member of President Franklin Roosevelt’s “Black Cabinet,” advising on matters pertaining to African Americans.

Clergyman and civil rights leader, Reverend Leon Sullivan, was instrumental in helping to end apartheid in South Africa, in part by developing the “Sullivan Principles,” a code of conduct for companies operating in that country. After graduating from West Virginia State College, Sullivan studied theology at Union Theological Seminary, New York City, and sociology at Columbia University, New York City. In 1950 he became pastor of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Philadelphia, a post he held until 1988.

Father Paul Washington (1921-2002), an Episcopalian priest and community activist, attended Lincoln University and graduated from Philadelphia Divinity School. In 1962, he became rector of the Church of the Advocate at 18th and Diamond Street in North Philadelphia and became renowned for his advocacy of the oppressed and disadvantaged as “the conscience of the city.” Among his accomplishments was his hosting of the National Black Power Conference and the Convention of the Black Panther Party, and his ordination of 11 women into the priesthood.
