On the North side of the Chancel is a 19C. Vestry, however part of it was partitioned off in the 1960's to house the Boiler for the heating system. While this Heating system was being installed during the 1960's a floor slab was lifted, this revealed beneath a brick shaft about 10-12 foot deep, some bricks were removed from the West side to reveal a Burial Vault about 16ft x 8ft x 4ft high. The only coffin in this vault was of the wife of
John Boyfield Millington (before John died burials inside the church was forbidden).
When the vault to the East was checked, it was to be found full of coffins & almost full of water.

LIST OF VICARS

On the first column in the North Aisle hangs a framed list of the Vicars of Gedney, beginning with Robert De Welldon in approximately 1250 up to the present day. In 1985, the Rev David Bratley, Presented by Queen Elizabeth II, was the First Vicar of the combined Parish of Gedney & neighbouring Fleet.
The rector nominated -- and the Abbot and Convent of Crowland Abbey instituted -- the vicars of Gedney before the Reformation.
The first known rector of Gedney Church was Baldwin, grandson of Fulk d’ Oyry. Fulk d’ Oyry was lord of the manor. Baldwin became rector about 1150. Probably the most famous rector was Richard Hakluyt, author of Principal Navigations, Voyages, and Discoveries of the English Nation, who was rector from 1612. He was buried in Westminster Abbey.
The last rector came to office in 1824; he was Clement Strong, LLB. The rectory is now held in perpetuity by the Dean and Chapter of Ely, who are still responsible to-day for the upkeep of the chancel.
After the Reformation, the monarch presented the vicars of Gedney. The vicar is now appointed by the King on the advice of the Prime Minister of the day.
“Sure all the Churches upon earth
He bore with tottering feet;
Rouen, Amiens, Bourges and Chartres,
Long Sutton, Gedney, Fleet.
So sweet, so terrible the load
It was as though he carried God.”
(From the Ballad of St. Christopher, by RICHARD LAWSON GALES, Vicar of Gedney 1909-1927.)

SOUTH PORCH

The Porch formerly had a Parvise (upper room).
Although this no longer exists, the upper floor level can be seen quite clearly, as too can the doors at the top and bottom of the stairs. The Porch also has a stone bench seat on each side.
The Great Wooden Door into the Church (usually opened into the modern interior Porch) is magnificent. There are the remains of a small Ivory Cross in the centre panel beside the Wicket Door. The Inscription on the Door reads;
"PAX CHRISTI SIT HUIC DOMUIET OMNIBUS HABITANTIBUS IN EA HIC REQUIES NOSTRA" which translates into "The Peace of Christ be on this House and all dwelling in it, Here is our rest". The Wicket Door, too, has an
Inscription: "IN HOPE” and there is a small 14th century ivory Crucifixion scene.
The brass lock inside the door reads-"BEWARE BEFORE AUYSETH JOHAN NESPETE.”

JESSE WINDOW

The East Window of the Lady Chapel is of a design known as The Tree of Jesse. (Jesse was one of the sons of Abraham and the founder of Judaism). This glass and fragments seen in other windows of the Nave are all that remain of the medieval stained glass. In the centre light there are remains of the early 14th century Jesse window - a figure seated and apparently holding a sword. There are large parts of other figures too, the colouring mainly yellow, green. brown, blue, and bright red.

The Tree of Jesse was often seen on medieval glass. It showed a vine stem, with the figure of Jesse reclining at the bottom, prophets and kings in its branches, and often the Virgin Mary and child at the top.

Much of the stained glass was damaged or destroyed during the Civil War and World War II when a German landmine exploded near the Church in 1941. The missing glass was replaced with ordinary clear glass after the War was over.

The wall below the Jesse window is of a lesser quality than the surrounding wall, this is likely to be a Victorian repair after moving the Altar tomb of Fulk D'Oyry to the South Aisle.

Chancel Cross

The tall chancel is 39 feet 7 inches high. It has a raised cross at its east end.

HIGH ALTAR, SQUINT & AUMBRY

There is a Squint (small window angled towards the High Altar). No doubt, in the past many Vicars have looked through it to check that the Altar was correctly set, however it was originally included to allow Lepers to see the Altar without
entering the Church.
The High Altar is reached by ascending 3 steps & through an opening in the fine carved stone Altar Rail.
The Aumbry in the North Wall was used to Reserve the Blessed Sacrament. The plaque on the Wall beside
the Aumbry reads “In loving memory of Theodore Crombie Gobat. Vicar of this Parish 1930-1937.” This man
was found dead by the old MGN Railway line after being hit by a train in mysterious circumstances.

It is known that the bells were removed, melted down & recast at Thomas Osborn's Foundry in Downham Market in 1974, restored at Parishioner's' expense. The 5 bells were rehung when the clock faces were renovated in 2008. In 1911, the 5 bells were taken to John Taylor's Foundry. They had to absail down the tower to complete the work. In Loughborough, they were re-tuned. In 1913, Taylor's cast the last of the 6 bells now in the Belfry.

HISTORY OF GEDNEY BELLS

John Bennett wrote:

The earliest record I have for the bells in Gedney was 29th April 1747. There would appear to have been 4 bells. Perhaps 5 but not confirmed.
The following was taken from the Gedney Town Book 2. This book covers the year 1731 to 1788. Not that easy to read.
29th April 1974:
Agreed at... With Thos. Hedderly for ye running of ye fourth bell that expense of four and twenty shillings per hundred and if it should happen so the cost of ye new bell out weighs ye old bell the Parishioners agree to allow one shilling per pound, and if ye new
bell falls short of ye weight of old one, founder is to allow ten pence pound and it is further agreed that ye bell shall be returned
in the ?? After ye delivery of ye ...? Bell, and ye money delivery of ye ..? Bell, and ye. Money to be paid ye fifth of May 1748....our hands
Thomas Hedderly
John “X” Hedderly
(The cross was his mark)

The bells were recast in 1794 by Thomas Osborn of Downham Market. The site of the foundry is known from the aptly named
“Soundings Alley” close to the centre of Downham.
We are not sure why this took place and who paid as it would have been a major undertaking.
In 1911 the five Osborn bells were rehung by Taylor of
Loughborough in a cast iron/steel frame which remains in service today. A sixth bell was added by Taylor in 1913. Overall they are in
good condition considering they were cast in 1794. However quite a number of Osborn bells remain in service today.
The photograph of the document was taken from the Gedney Town book No2, which covers the years 1731 to 1788.
The text is difficult to decipher but Mr Bennett offers this as a summary:

April 29th1747
Agreed at ............ with Thos. Hedderly for ye running of ye fourth bell that expense as four and twenty shillings per hundred and if it should happen so the cut of ye new bell out weighs ye old bell the parishioners agree to allow one shilling per pound, and if ye new bell falls short of ye weight of old one, founder is to allow ten pence per pound. it is further agreed that ye bell shall be returned in the ?? month after ye delivery of ye ?? bell, and ye money to be paid ye fifth of May 1748.

Each signatory making a mark.
There follows a list of payments, some ten, totalling £9-4-5. These payments were dated 22nd May 1947 with the words “was received ye old bell”.
One presumes that “ye fourth bell” left Gedney on or around that date. We do not know what was wrong with it, perhaps cracked or out of tune.
From this entry in the Gedney Town Book 2 one can deduce.
1) Prior to 1794 there were certainly four bells in the tower. Perhaps there were five, as the largest bell would normally be “the tenor”, and not “ye fourth bell”.
2) I cannot understand the figure in the agreement.
Hedderly took the old bell and paid in separate sums, £9-4-5. Does this correspond to “four and twenty shillings per hundred”? If so the old number four bell weighed approximately 7¾ cwt.
Note: Thomas Hedderly was a son or perhaps grandson of Daniel Hedderly who reportedly lived in Derby, Burton-on-Trent ,
Litchfield and finally moving to Lincoln in 1735. He died in June 1766. He started the bell foundry. Thomas continued and cast many bells in Lincolnshire.

TOWER ENTRANCE

The Tower is the oldest remaining part of the Church. The first three stages are of the Early English style, built in about 1280, but the top third is in the Perpendicular style, 15C. with a small Pyramidal Spire. However, the current Spire is quite new. The
earlier one was struck by Lightning, the Lead melted and the timbers were so badly burned that a new Spire had to be added. A plaque to commemorate this can be seen on the Column to the left of the Tower entrance stating that:
"The Restoration of this Tower in 1933 was the Gift of Dora Mason, in memory of her husband, John Thomas Mason, a native of Gedney.”

Gedney tower has setback buttresses. The 27 feet, 5 inches ground stage has two lancets, one to the west and one to the south. Both have dog-tooth ornamentation on the hood-mould. They are splayed. The arch to the nave has much dog-tooth.

The 9 feet, 7inches next stage has blank arcading on the three exterior sides. The blank arcading has five pointed arches with six shafts that have shaft-rings.

The next 18 feet, 4 inches stage has the original two-twin bell openings on all four sides. Each side has twin-pointed arches with dog-tooth hood-moulding and many shafts with shaft-rings. Two-thirds of the two-twin bell openings on the east side of the tower were enclosed within the church since the roof was raised. There are clocks on the south and north sides of this stage just above the bell-openings.

The 30 feet, 8 inches last stage of the tower is Perpendicular in style. (The tower is 86 feet high overall.) This Stage also has two-twin bell openings on all four sides, but they are much taller than the Early English ones. They have transoms and twin ogee gables. Just below the parapet there is a frieze made up of a series of diamond shapes.

Above this, there is a 3 foot high polygonal start to what could have been the original spire. Instead, there is a 20 foot high lead spike, half the height it should have been. This is surmounted by a 5 foot weathervane. From the ground to the top of the vane, it is 94 feet high.

VESTRY
On the North side of the Chancel is a 19C.Vestry, however part of it was partitioned off in the 1960's to house the Boiler for the heating system. While this Heating system was being installed during the 1960's, a floor slab was lifted,
this revealed beneath a brick shaft about 10-12 foot deep, some bricks were removed from the West side to reveal a Burial Vault about 16ft × 8ft × 4ft high. The only coffin in this vault was of the
wife of John Boyfield Millington (before John died burials inside the church was forbidden). When the vault to the East was checked, it was to be found full of coffins & almost full of water.
