I know we run one chiller 24/7 for guest satisfaction reasons and always have a couple hundred tons of load on it. But I have not been around the plant long enough to know how often we need the second chiller and what that amounts to in terms of annual run time.

If I am remembering correctly, the blended rate for our last bill was around $0.16 per kWh. I can verify that for you if you need the exact number.
I guess if you are doing something that will reduce demand in addition to saving energy, you would need to know the demand charge and the time of day rate schedule, which I really don't remember off the top of my head. But I can look that stuff up for you and e-mail it to you.

That can get a little "fuzzy" because, from what I have observed, our load is driven by our occupancy in addition to the outdoor conditions. But a bad day for us is 80% occuppied, so I think the outdoor conditions are the bigger driver.
So, what I am trying to say here, I guess, is that while I have needed to bring a second chiller on line when it was in the upper 60°sF, most of the time, we can hold off until it is the low to mid 70's°F and not get complaints, which can be expensive if we have to comp the guests.
The control system is programmed to stage the chillers based on plant leaving water temperature, but we sometimes put them in hand because if Chiller 1 is the lag chiller and comes on too soon, it short cycles. And when it's the lead chiller, it short cycles like crazy. I was kind of hoping you could help us figure out why that is happening and how to fix it.

Unless the desired operating point is near the end of the impeller line on the pump curve, throttling will tend to save energy due to the interaction of flow, head, and pump efficiency as you throttle the pump to push the operating point up the impeller line to the desired flow rate.
Even though throttling add head (and thus energy) the reduction in flow reduces the energy requirement. Thus, as the operating point is pushed towards the flatter part of the pump curve, very small increases in head result in large reductions in flow and there is a net over-all reduction in the power required. Pump efficiency at various points on the curve plays into this also.
That said, if you could shift the operating point down the system curve instead of up the impeller line, you typically will save more energy because you are reducing both flow and head.
There area number of ways you can estimate the potential savings associated with shifting down the system curve vs. up the impeller line based on the position of the valve's throttling mechanism or the pressures at the pump if you could find the performance curves for one or the other. You would also need to figure out the cost of electricity, and make some engineering assumptions regarding the flow the pump is producing when its throttled and how many hours the pump runs.
And you would have to come up with a relationship that allowed you to come up with power and energy using these field clues.

The potential for the valve seat to fail due to the activity of the check valve, requiring that you shut down and drain the system to make a repair is quite true and is something you should consider if you are going to use a valve of this type. If the check valve seat is leaking then flow from the active pump will recirculate through the inactive pump, stealing capacity from the system and creating a potential start-up problem if the inactive pump is started against a revers spinning motor.
For a non-mission critical facility, a system shut down for repair may not be a huge issue; it could be coordinated for the unoccupied hours when the system was off line.
But for a mission critical facility, the need for an outage to make a relatively minor repair could be very costly and disruptive.
Even if you are "stuck" with the valve since you did not realize the issue when it was specified and installed, lessons like this make good design review targets for future projects.

When working on electrical equipment, it is absolutely critical to comply with the protocols in place at the facility where you are working and also with good practice.
Good practice would dictate that you open the disconnect switch and lock it open with your designated lock along with a tag indicating that you had placed the lock on the disconnect. In some facilities, you may not be able to do this unless you have proper credentials, for instance, arc-flash training certifications or being a licensed electrician.

We intentionally made the instructions cover the whole screen at start-up to encourage you to take a minute to read through them This will help you gain the maximum benefit from the exercise. Notice there are several tabs. This first one give you general instructions on how to navigate the model and what the function of the buttons are in the lower left corner. The second provides guidance about the icons you will run into as you navigate through the model, which generally are hot spots that open other views or interactive elements.The third provides some background information about what is going on in the facility on the day of your virtual exercise. The events and climate conditions likely impact the systems you will be observing.


This exercise is intended to allow you to generally explore the Hijend Hotel central chilled water plant and then focus on scoping the condenser water system and cooling towers. The model uses three different types of images to create the tour.


• Plan and elevation views
• Panoramas
• 360° spherical views


As you pan around in the different views and mouse over them, you will discover "hot spots" that will show up as a highlighted area. If you click on one of them, you will find things like information, questions you can answer to score points, or be taken to a different view based on the hot spot location. For instance, a hot spot over a door will probably take you through the door. A hot spot over an item like a piece of equipment will probably take you to a question or information about the item.


The plans, elevations and panorama views will be the most realistic. But, the plans and elevations will have very limited panning and zooming and are used to focus on a particular learning experience.


In contrast, the panoramas will allow you to pan left and right and zoom a bit but will not allow you to pan up and down. It is as if you were standing someplace and turned your head left or right to look around. They are used to allow you to explore the model with the most realistic perspective and will contain hot spots that you can select so that you can investigate something in greater detail and perhaps score a point or two.


The 360° spherical views generally provide full flexibility to look in all directions and zoom quite a bit. But because of the technique used to create them, they will have some distortion associated with them. However, they are useful if you are trying to trace out a pipe, duct, or conduit because they will allow you to follow it, just like you would in the field. Thus they provide a different way to explore the model if you are trying to trace out a line. They may also contain hot spots that allow you to score a point or two.


There are a number of ways to navigate through the model. One is to use the floor plan viewer in the upper left corner. A drop down menu allows you to pick different areas in the model. The floor plans contain a number of red dots. When you click on a red dot, you will be asked if you want a panorama or 360° spherical view if both are available for that point. In this case, you can select the view you want, close the window, adn that view will open. If there is only one option, that view will simply open, no questions asked.


Either way, the refrence point will be the point where the red dot is, as if you were standing there. The yellow "radars" around the dot or square when you have clicked on it show your approximate field of view.


Note that hot spots are generally not replicated in the different views. In other words, if there is a hot spot over a pump in one view and that same pump shows up in a different view, there generally will not be a duplicate hot spot in the second view. Bottom line, if you want to find everything, you need to explore the model from all of the view points provided. If you are in a real mechanical space, this is also true. Sometimes, a critical detail is only realy noticable from one, very specific perspective. So you want to learn to look at things from different angles.


Note also that if both a panorama and 360° spherical view are available for a given point, the hot spots are not duplicated. Thus, if you want to find everything there is to find, you should explore both panoramas. But generally, most of the hot spots are provided in the panorama while the 360° spherical views are primarily for tracing things out. The exeption is that a hot spot will be provided in the 360° view if there was not a way to make the target visible in the panorama due to limited zooming and or panning capabilities.


There is a button in the lower left corner that lets you turn the floor plans on and off and generally you will probably want to turn them off once you have selected a location to maximize your viewing area. If, after following a series of hot spots, you find yourself "stuck" with no way back to where you came from, you can always use the floor plan viewer to return to one of the locations it contains and move on from there.


The buttons in the lower left corner of the screen will allow you to toggle a number of things on and off so you can refer to them as needed but otherwise free up the view.


• The one at the far left that looks like a floor plan toggles the floor plan on and off.
• The "View Information" button toggles the general information on the lower right corner on and off.
• The "Instructions" button toggles this instruction card (what you are currently reading) on and off
• The speaker button toggles the sound on and off. You probably will want to turn it off for peace of mind and to protect your hearing (kind of like using ear plugs on a site). But occasionally, you may want to turn it on because
sometimes, sounds are clues.
• The score button toggles your score on and off.
• The camera button will take a screen shot and allow you to save it. It is analogous to being out in the field and taking a picture with your camera when you are scoping out a project or doing field work.
