Shadai Amulet
A Shadai (or Shaddai) amulet is a traditional Jewish protective charm featuring the Hebrew name of God, שדי (Shaddai), which symbolizes protection, strength, and warding off evil. Often crafted in silver as pendants or plaques, these amulets are used to protect wearers, homes, or children from the "evil eye," disasters, and for good fortune.
Inscriptions & Imagery: Beyond the name "Shaddai," these amulets frequently feature the Hebrew letters (Shin), representations of the Menorah, Tablets of the Law, or other Kabbalistic symbols.
Symbolism: "Shaddai" is one of the Biblical names for God, often interpreted in this context as an acronym for Shomer Daltot Yisrael (Guardian of the Doors of Israel).
Usage: Used for general protection, health, overcoming illness, or to aid in childbirth.
Varieties: Common forms include pendants, hamsa-shaped charms, or plaques designed for hanging in a home, with origins often found in Italian or Middle Eastern Jewish traditions.

Torah Crowns
Venetian Torah crowns (keter or atarah) from the 17th–18th centuries are ornate silver, often parcel-gilt, ritual ornaments reflecting the wealth of Venice's Jewish community. These crowns frequently feature repoussé decorations of flowers, conches, and symbolic religious items like the Tablets of the Law.
Design: Often divided into a base and an upper part, these crowns are designed to sit on top of the Torah scroll's wooden staves.
Prominent Makers: Andrea Zambelli, known as "L'Honnesta" (active 1732–1772), produced significant Venetian silver Torah crowns
Symbolism: Representing the royalty and supreme importance of the Torah, they often feature motifs such as the Temple menorah, priestly head-gear, and other, related, ritual, items.

Beit Schmidt is a museum of Italian Jewry that was established in Jerusalem between the years 1880–1920.
The museum was opened in order to preserve the Jewish heritage of Italy. It was founded in a building that had previously served as a Catholic school and was designed by the Templar architect Theodor Sandel. The property includes additional buildings that once functioned as a hospital and a hostel for pilgrims. Today, these buildings house the Jerusalem municipal officer’s headquarters and the Italian synagogue “Conegliano Veneto” (the Italian Synagogue of Jerusalem).
The museum building is named Beit Schmidt after the Vincentian Catholic priest Friedrich Wilhelm Schmidt, a linguist specializing in Semitic languages who was very active in the school.
History of the Site
Ladislaus Schneider was an important activist among German Catholics and insisted that they, too, should operate in Jerusalem. In 1877, he purchased a plot of land in the city with the intention of establishing the first German Catholic center in Jerusalem. The center was founded at the initiative of the German Catholic Palestine Association. It served as a hostel for pilgrims and as a place for settlers, researchers, and scholars.
A few years later, in 1886, two large buildings were constructed on the property: the school and the hospital. Both buildings admitted educated individuals with strong recommendations.

a virtual 3d exhibition
Ripples of Venice invites you on a journey through memory, resilience, and creativity -where past and present meet across centuries of Jewish life.
The contemporary works featured in this exhibition were created through five special artist residencies organized by Beit Venezia - A Home for Jewish Culture, founded and directed by Shaul Bassi. Each residency offers a fresh artistic response to the legacy of Jewish Venice. These new works are presented in dialogue with historic Judaica objects made by the Venetian Jewish community from the Renaissance to the early 20th century.
Beit Venezia brings Jewish artists from around the world to live, learn, and create in Venice. Immersed in the city's rich Jewish legacy, these artists craft new works inspired by their experiences - weaving their own visions into the living tapestry of Jewish Venice. This legacy is rooted in the Venetian Ghetto, established in 1516 as the first officially designated Jewish ghetto in the world. Surrounded by walls and gates, it confined the Jewish community to a small, enclosed area of the city. Despite confinement, the Jews of Venice built a vibrant and resilient society, blending Italian and Jewish traditions and giving birth to a thriving center of Hebrew printing, scholarship, and art the influence of which spread across Europe and beyond-like ripples - carried by printing folios and Venetian merchant's ships.
The historic objects on view, drawn from the permanent collection of the
U. Nahon Museum of Italian Jewish Art, are paired with these contemporary reflections. Together, they trace the enduring flow of Jewish life that persists and flourish despite hardship, commanding us to carry on.
From the narrow alleys of Venice to the heart of Jerusalem, the spirit of resilience moves forward, undiminished. Ripples of Venice celebrates the creativity, learning, and hope that have sustained Jewish life across generations - a living testament to resilience, renewal, and the unbreakable bonds between Jewish collective memory and the future.
